Assist America’s Operation Center received a call from the husband of a member who has Assist America’s services through her health insurance plan. The member suffered a stroke while vacationing in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic with her husband and two children. Her husband, who is a Registered Nurse, expressed concern about the quality of care at the local hospital where she was admitted. After assessing the situation, Assist America’s medical team agreed and provided an emergency medical evacuation via air ambulance to a hospital in Southern Florida. Once she was ready for discharge, Assist America provided a medical repatriation on a commercial flight back to the family’s home in Minnesota with a medical escort to assist.

PASSING IN FLORIDA

Assist America’s Operation Center was contacted by the husband of a member who had Assist America’s services through her Medicare Advantage plan. The couple was vacationing in Florida and the member’s husband shared that he had taken his wife to the hospital because she was experiencing abdominal pain, nausea and other symptoms. Assist America’s medical team reviewed her medical records, spoke to the treating physician and learned that the member was suffering from kidney failure. Unfortunately, the prognosis was grim and she was only expected to live for up to a week. Assist America remained in contact with the member’s husband and the hospital and a few days later she passed away. Assist America paid to have her body cremated and transported back to their home in Pennsylvania, according to her husband’s wishes.

AUTO ACCIDENT IN CUBA

Assist America’s Operation Center in Princeton received a call from the daughter of a member who had been seriously injured in an auto accident.  As a result of the accident, the member had broken arms and hips, as well as swelling of the lungs and trauma throughout his body.  Assist America’s medical team immediately began corresponding with the treating medical team at the hospital and obtained medical records.   After an extended stay in the hospital, the member was ready for discharge from the hospital.  Assist America arranged and paid for a medical repatriation via air ambulance with a full medical team to monitor his condition during the flight. He was taken to a rehabilitation facility near his home to continue his recovery.

Assist America’s Operations Center in Princeton received a call from the spouse of a member stating that her husband fell while skiing and suffered a broken femur.  At the time of the call, the member was in the hospital awaiting surgery.  Assist America’s medical team contacted the treating hospital, obtained medical records and monitored his care.  Once the member’s surgery was completed and he was ready for discharge, Assist America arranged and paid for a medical repatriation by commercial air carrier.  The member’s wife was capable of acting as a non-medical escort, so Assist America arranged and paid the cost of her airfare as well.

Assist America’s Operations Center in Princeton received a call from a member’s fiancé who notified our medical team that her fiancée suffered a spinal fracture from a snowboarding accident.  At the time of the call, the member was in the hospital and just out of surgery.  Assist America’s medical team immediately contacted the treating hospital and reviewed his medical records.  Due to his injuries, the member was now paralyzed below his waist and needed to enter a rehabilitation facility.  Once the member was stable and could be safely transported, Assist America arranged and paid for the member to be transported by air ambulance to a suitable rehabilitation facility near his home.

Assist America’s Operation Center in Princeton received a call from a member on a boat trip who injured her spine when she jumped into the water near some rocks.  At the time of the call, she had already been admitted into the hospital and received surgery.  Assist America’s medical team immediately spoke with the treating team at the hospital and reviewed her medical records.  It was determined that once she was ready for discharge, she could safely return home by commercial air carrier.  Assist America arranged and paid for the member to be transported in a business class seat via commercial flight.

Assist America’s Operation Center received a call from the mother of a two-year old boy who had a severe cough for several days. The family was vacationing in Florida and was not familiar with the area. She wanted to take her son to be examined and receive treatment. Assist America’s coordinator identified a local urgent care clinic and confirmed the hours of operation, that the clinic accepted walk-ins and also was capable of treating a two-year-old pediatric patient. The member’s son was diagnosed with Croup and received treatment. Assist America’s coordinator follow-up with the member the next day to confirm that her son was feeling better.
