The most damaging earthquake to hit Port Vila in over 20 years struck this morning, December 17th. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake impacted Vanuatu’s largest city and surrounding areas, originating offshore 30 km (19 miles) west of Port Vila in the Coral Sea. While tsunami warnings were lifted within hours of the initial quake, authorities warn against coastal activities due to non-operational monitoring equipment. At least 11 aftershocks have been recorded so far, with the risk of more, which may cause further structural and infrastructure damage.
The natural disaster has led to widespread destruction, including landslides, power outages, damage to the two main water reservoirs, and multiple damages to buildings and infrastructure. At least 6 deaths have been confirmed at this time. Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) is closed, with potential runway damage. The full impact of the earthquake is still under assessment, particularly in remote areas, with casualty numbers and damage reports expected to rise.
