Tropical Cyclone Rae Approaching Lau Islands
Tropical Cyclone Rae is tracking southward through the South Pacific, nearing the southern Lau Islands as of late February 24th. The storm is forecasted to strengthen slightly before weakening into a Category 1 cyclone as it moves away from Fiji, towards the south of Tonga, by February 26th. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued storm warnings for parts of the Lau Islands and Moala, with gale force wind warnings in effect for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, and other nearby islands. Heavy rain and flash flood warnings remain in place for all of Fiji and Tonga.
Severe weather conditions, including flooding, coastal surges, and power outages may affect these regions. Low-lying areas and rivers may experience dangerous flash flooding, while high winds could damage infrastructure and disrupt transportation. Flight cancellations or delays are possible at Nadi International Airport (NAN) and Fua’amotu International Airport (TBU).
