Dual Eruption Forces Closure of Catania Airport
Dual eruptions from Italian volcanoes Mount Etna and Stromboli have disrupted flights and forced a temporary closure of Catania’s only airport. Authorities have raised the alert level to the highest red level due to increased volcanic activity at Mount Stromboli Volcano, Sicily, as of July 5th. Although activity calmed overnight, further eruptions, seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides are likely in the coming days. No evacuation orders have been issued yet, but plans are ready for the island's 500 inhabitants, if necessary.
