Evacuations Begin Ahead of Anticipated Volcanic Eruption in the Philippines
As ash and debris rise from the summit of the Mayon Volcano, evacuation orders have been issued to clear the surrounding area ahead of an anticipated eruption. As of Wednesday, June 14th, some 17,000 people have been displaced in and around the six kilometer radius surrounding the volcano. Analyzing the existing activity, volcanologists anticipate that an eruption could be imminent anywhere between a few weeks to a few days. Though Mayon has shown some unusual fluctuations and patterns of activity, official directives advise precautions be taken for the time being as the activity is classified at this time as an Alert Level 3.
