Hurricane Milton's Arrival Looms Over Florida

Hurricane Milton is rapidly intensifying as it continues to track eastward across the Gulf of Mexico. The storm has strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane and is anticipated to make landfall over the west coast of Florida on the evening of October 9th. Milton is the strongest storm system to hit the area since Hurricane Rita in 2005. Severe weather conditions are expected in the region with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges.

Due to effects of Hurricane Helene nearly two weeks prior, more than 10,000 people in Florida remain without power. A state of emergency has been declared in 51 counties, with mandatory evacuation orders in place across Lee, Manatee, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Swells from the storm may produce coastal flooding, along with dangerous waves and current conditions.
