Increased Volcanic Activity at Kanlaon

Authorities have escalated the alert for Kanlaon volcano in Negros Occidental Province, Philippines following an eruption on December 9th. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has issued a warning regarding additional volcanic activity in the coming hours. The eruption generated a 3 km (2.5 miles) high ash cloud that traveled southwest and emitted spurts of hot ash, gases and fragmented volcanic rock about 2 miles down the mountains southwest flank.

Four upland villages of La Castellana Town are being evacuated, affecting approximately 87,000 residents. A safety zone extending 6 km (4 miles) from the crater has been created, with warnings of potential additional evacuations in the near future. Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD) may experience flight delays if the ash plume grows more severe.
