Islandwide Power Outage Disrupts Puerto Rico

A major power outage impacted much of Puerto Rico on April 16th, leaving over 1 million homes and businesses without electricity. The outage began around 12:40 PM and is affecting areas such as San Juan, Bayamón, Ponce, Arecibo, and Caguas. An official cause has not been cited, but a major power plant failure in San Juan is believed to be the source of the outage. Officials estimate that restoration could take up to 48 hours.

Public transportation systems such as the Tren Urbano have suspended service, and commercial activity, traffic lights, and mobile networks have all been affected. Some essential services, including ATMs and gas stations, may be temporarily unavailable.
