Memorial Day Travel Expected to be Heaviest in a Decade

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the summer travel season, and this year, travel is expected to be the heaviest it’s been in a decade with Thursday, Friday, and Monday anticipated to be the busiest days for airlines. More than seven million people have already passed though airline checkpoints, according to data supplied by the Transportation Security Administration. On the tails of the 45,000 cancellations from last summer’s travel season, the Department of Transportation has reported that the first three months of 2023 has yielded a cancellation rate of below 2% for U.S. airlines, which offsets the anticipated weekend surge. TSA has also reported the onboarding of more staff this year to decrease the risk of potential delays, as many airlines have reduced summer flying at the request of the Federal Aviation Administration. Internationally, in the wake of the recent European protests, air traffic control is expected to be the greatest hurdle to overcome this season for overseas travelers.

ADVICE

  • With the increase in airport traffic, parking lots and garages may also experience extreme delays. Consider alternative transportation options like rideshares to get to and from your terminal.
  • Limiting luggage to a carry-on may save time in the event of flight complications and reduce the risk of lost or misplaced belongings.
  • Plan your trip in advance to minimize other potential delays. Assist America members may utilize the Pre-Trip Information service available to them through the Assist America website or the mobile app.
