Severe Flooding Across West Africa
Severe flooding continues to impact parts of Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, causing widespread disruptions and significant displacement. Heavy rainfall has led to the deaths of over 170 people in Nigeria since Aug. 20th, with more than 500,000 affected and 200,000 displaced. In Niger, 217 fatalities have been reported since June, while Mali has declared a state of emergency with at least 30 deaths.
Floodwaters have damaged infrastructure, destroyed homes, and disrupted utilities across the region. The risk of water-borne diseases is rising as stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria. Further rainfall is expected, and additional flooding and landslides are likely in vulnerable areas.
