Severe Wildfires Torch Athens
On the outskirts of Athens, firefighters continue to manage the remaining blazes left over from a three-day inferno that torched the city. The wildfire consumed woodland, several homes and buildings, and claimed at least one life – forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents.
Sporadic flare-ups continue as of Wednesday, due to dry and arid conditions affecting the surrounding areas, leaving them vulnerable to rekindling. The fire affected 24,710 acres of land and the source of the blaze remains undetermined. Greece remains on high fire alert until Thursday from anticipated high temperatures and winds.
