Storm Daniel Casualties Escalate in Libya
The resulting flooding and damage from Storm Daniel has resulted in over 5,200 fatalities and counting. The storm system that swept through and devastated the area between September 9th and 11th caused dams in Derna Valley to fail and destroyed large portions of the city of Derna. More than 34,000 have been displaced by the disaster throughout Libya.
Mobile communication outages have been reported in Derna and other utility disruptions are likely. A state of emergency has been declared in the city. Other affected areas include the northeastern coastal cities of Al Bayda, Al Marj, Benghazi, and Soussa. A mandatory curfew is now in place in parts of eastern Libya as recovery and rescue efforts are ongoing.
