Tackling the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene

Major disruptions persist in the path carved out by Hurricane Helene across parts of southeastern U.S. as of September 30th. After making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane in Florida’s Big Bend region, the storm weakened as it moved over Georgia and then transitioned into a post-tropical cyclone over Tennessee and Kentucky. Rescue missions are ongoing in stricken areas, with 2,000 people remaining temporarily housed in shelters and 116 fatalities reported.

Over two million homes remain without power, down from a high of over four million on early September 27th. Many roads have been damaged or blocked by flooding and debris, restricting access to some areas affected, especially in the Carolinas. Thousands of flights have been canceled throughout the affected region as well as widespread interruptions to transit and other essential operations.
