Tropical Storm Oscar has made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Baracoa, Cuba, on October 20th. Forecast models suggest that Oscar will slightly weaken as it moves northwestward by the afternoon of October 21st. Tropical storm conditions are expected with exceptional rainfall over southeastern Bahamas. Rising water levels along the coast of eastern Cuba are expected to generate large and destructive waves over the coming hours.
The system is expected to maintain its tropical storm strength as it exits northeast further out into the North Atlantic and towards the Bahamas. The Cuban government has temporarily paused non-essential administrative and educational activities nationwide, amid the storms impact and ongoing power supply challenges. The Atlantic hurricane season is not anticipated to end until November 30th. An approximated fifteen tropical depressions/storms and nine hurricanes have already affected the general area, surpassing the historic average for the region.
