Tropical Storm Sara Approaching Northern Honduras
Tropical Storm Sara is strengthening as it moves west over northern Honduras after making landfall over Gracias a Dios Department on the Nicaragua-Honduras border late November 14th. The system is anticipated to maintain its strength before weakening into a tropical depression as it tracks northwest across Belize, far northern Guatemala and into Campeche State, Mexico, early November 18th. Weather advisories have been put into place for strong winds, storm surges, and heavy rainfall totals across various areas of the Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, and western Nicaragua.
Severe flash floods and landslides are expected due to heavy rain, particularly around the Sierra La Esperanza region. The northern coast of Honduras could see storm surges of 0.3-0.9 meters (1-3 feet) above normal tide levels, producing large, destructive waves. The Atlantic hurricane season is not anticipated to end until November 30th. This has been the eighteenth named storm of the season, surpassing the historic average for the region.
