Volcanic Activity in Iceland and Japan

A volcanic eruption began in Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula near Grindavik on April 1st, leading to evacuations as lava breached protective barriers. The fissure has expanded to 1.2 km (0.7 miles), causing infrastructure damage. A state of emergency has been declared, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. While Reykjavik may experience temporary air quality issues due to volcanic gases, Keflavik International Airport (KEF) remains operational. Officials warn of potential lava flow damage, road closures, and transport disruptions in the region.

In Japan, officials have raised the alert level for Shinmoedake Volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture due to heightened seismic activity. Volcanic earthquakes and underground expansion have been increasing since March 28th, suggesting an eruption could occur. If it does, large volcanic rocks could be ejected up to 4 km (2.5 miles), with pyroclastic flows reaching 2 km (1.25 miles). Authorities have expanded restricted zones but have not issued evacuations. Ashfall could disrupt transportation, reduce visibility, and impact nearby areas.
